USB – What is a Type C Connection and Its Benefits

0

With the rapid development of technology, mobile devices have become more powerful and capable of so much more. But curiously enough, the free chargers that come with some devices are outdated and slow. As a result, your high-tech gadget spends more time plugged into the charger than in your hands, where it belongs.

While many have attempted to revolutionise device charging and make it more efficient, few have prospered. One that found success is the recent development of USB C chargers. If you haven’t heard about them, it’s time that you got to know them better.

What is the USB Type-C Connection?

Details about the USB Type-C connection was first made public in 2014, but it was not until last year that the technology truly gained momentum. It is a marked improvement from the USB-A type port connection that has been used for the past 20 years.

USB Type-C is an industry-standard connector that can be used to transmit either data or power. Tests are even underway to implement the technology in audio connection as a potential replacement for the 3.5 mm audio jack. It features a new connector shape, symmetrically rounded at both ends.

With its unique profile and reversibility in orientation, it is distinctly different from and more advantageous than the rectangular USB-C that has a designated right side up position. What is more, it is backwards compatible with older types of cable connection. This means that you do not have to replace old devices if you want to convert to USB-C. All you need is a physical adaptor, and you are good to go.

Still, the biggest draw of USB-C is much more profound. Capable of transmitting power of up to 100 watts, it is better than the predecessor’s 12 watts capacity by leaps and bounds. It is also capable of transmitting data 20 times faster, which is a necessity nowadays, given the increasing size of data files. Aside from ongoing efforts to integrate it into audio technology, it also works for video connections such as computer displays. With its versatility and efficiency, experts believe that, in time, this type of connection will rule as the single standard for cable connection in the world of personal technology.

What Are the Benefits of USB C Chargers?

While the advantage of USB-C in mobile devices is far-reaching, it is in chargers that the benefit is most pronounced. With its higher wattage, a USB-C charger can fully charge any device much faster. To illustrate, an iPhone XR goes from 0% to 17% after 30 minutes of charging with its standard 5-watt charger. With an 18-watt USB charger, the same charging time can bring the device from empty to 50%.

Small devices like smartphones benefit significantly from USB C chargers, but the gain becomes more substantial as the device gets bigger. A tablet charged for 30 minutes using a USB-A charger will go from 0% to ten per cent, but the same device charged for the same amount of time but with a good USB charger will easily go from empty to 33%. Charging laptops would not be a problem with USB Type-C chargers. Regardless of its brand or make, this type of connection is applicable. The universal in USB has never been more apt than in the Type C connection.

Investing in USB-C type chargers is the best decision you could make in this age of mobile technology. It comes at an affordable price point, especially when compared to brand-specific laptop chargers. It is also capable of charging lower-powered devices without damaging their batteries. It is the only charger you could possibly need to charge all USB devices.
