U.S. defender Eric Lichaj is set to join Leeds United on loan from Aston Villa for one month, according to MLSSoccer.com.
The 22-year-old outside back has appeared in five EPL matches for Villa, but hasn’t played since being famously villified by manager Gerard Houllier after a 4-0 defeat to Man City. Whether this dressing-down was truly justifed is certainly debatable, as just two days prior to the City loss, Lichaj did a great job containing star midfielder Gareth Bale in a 2-1 loss to Spurs.
Even though it’s a short loan, hopefully the move will yield some meaningful minutes for Lichaj. While the Whites have plenty of young talent up top and through the midfield, their spotty backline has allowed 47 goals on the season, the highest total by a wide margin among the top six clubs in the Championship.
Leeds is currently in sixth place in the table, 10 points behind leaders QPR, but just three points shy of the second-place automatic promotion slot.
Lichaj joins fellow American Mike Grella at Elland Road.
